Effect of the coronavirus on business. What to do?

Companies and businesses around the world are currently facing the effects of the coronavirus COVID-19. Rethinking new strategies will be inevitable when it comes to surviving or taking advantage of new opportunities in the face of this unexpected call for change.

Effect of the coronavirus

A few days ago, when I went to an appointment with my doctor and we were immersed in an interesting conversation, we invariably ended up talking about current health issues. The pandemic caused by COVID 19 or coronavirus.

In his words, “COVID-19 is part of a natural selection process, where sick, fragile or weak people die and healthier or stronger people survive. The planet is already demanding this of us, there are many of us, so either we subsist or we die”.

If we take that statement into consideration and reflect on it, it will be inevitable to realize that the same effect exists in the business world. That, in the same way, those destined to survive and to be able to give an account of what happened to future generations, will be all those who by their capacities and/or abilities have been able to adapt and face change quickly.

An example of this is to witness every day that, just as there are businesses that have ceased to exist, there are some that are being born and others that are prospering, even exponentially. Product of the opportunities that the “new world” or the “new normality” are offering (greater exploitation of social networks, electronic commerce, distance work, etc.) and these taking advantage.

What should we do?

How do we manage to have a sufficiently malleable company that allows us not only to survive, but to develop in any environment that presents itself?

A bet on order, in the midst of disorder!

An enduring way and, above all, with the minimum investment; it starts with observing the company as a human system. A system where mind (governing scheme) and body (rest of the organization) are in total alignment, so that what happens in the mind, is reflected in the body and vice versa.

To prepare the “mind”, the steps to be followed, start with the definition of a business strategy and its corresponding business model aligned to it.

Once we have both, we design the business architecture that will support that model. Next, we define the objectives, plans, budgets and of course, the prevention or contingency plans, through which we will be able to overcome any obstacle in the achievement of our strategy.

However, while all of the above helps us to map out the journey, what truly provides the flexibility and ordering for change is, without a doubt, getting the “body” to work in concert with the mind. This is achieved by developing a culture of both process management and change management and, above all, having in our ranks the right profile of people who understand, live and promote our dynamics of doing things.

Only then will we be able to turn our business into an entity as malleable as water, only then can we be, not what we want to be, but what we have to be.

To adapt or die, now more than ever, is nature’s inexorable imperative.
– H.G Wells
